Welcome to Phoenix Engineering, a family-run multi-disciplined engineering business established in 1993. With over 30 years of expertise, we specialize in the maintenance and refurbishment of leachate treatment plants and related facilities. Our journey has been marked by dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Our Journey

Founded by Terry Trewern, Phoenix Engineering has evolved significantly over the past three decades. Our continuing development has led us to broaden our design skills over the years to offer complete leachate treatment plant design, construction, commissioning, and operational training, maintenance, and servicing throughout the UK to even the most stringent global water quality standards.

In short, we offer and are known for providing complete leachate solutions, from defining the problem to building all necessary infrastructure and partnering with our clients during operation to refurbishing the same plants beyond their reasonable design life after 20 to 30 years of successful operation.

We are still known for being the best at aerobic sequencing batch reaction technology. A technology based on our own simple, low-cost, tried-and-tested treatment system, based upon just one simple lagoon or tank reactor: A method that was originally developed in the 1980s from extensive, publicly funded research undertaken for the UK government by Howard Robinson and extensively reported in peer-reviewed scientific papers.

But our skills don’t end there. We are also adept at using advanced treatment technologies like denitrification and ultrafiltration, activated-carbon filtration, dissolved air flotation (DAF), etc., in our leachate treatment plants as needed to comply with the applicable discharge consent standards. Our history is a testament to our adaptability and forward-thinking approach to engineering solutions, where we continue to be the leaders.

Unlike our competitors, we don’t buy in our control panels; we build them in our factory in Cornwall, allowing us to tailor them very precisely to the special requirements of leachate management and treatment. The same goes for our access platforms and walkways, making them unbeatable for their utility and longevity in corrosive leachate environments.

We are unique in the industry for Kevin Trewern’s in-house coding skills that have allowed us to build and maintain our own SCADA system, DLOG, which we have honed over the years to provide all the most up-to-date, user-friendly remote plant operational facilities. Our app provides on-screen real-time visualization of all the important plant operating parameters and yet none of the built-in obsolescence problems that so often occur for other control systems. Phoenix Engineering appreciates that the computer industry in general operates to support their devices for no more than 5 years, and that simply does not cut it when leachate treatment facilities need to run for 30 years or more.

Our Team

At the heart of Phoenix Engineering is our team, led by the Trewern family. Terry, Kevin, and Ross Trewern bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, steering our company towards continual growth and success. Our team also includes key members like Howard Robinson and Helen Gribble, each playing a pivotal role in our operations and success.

Our Expertise and Services

We offer specialized services in the design and build, refurbishment, and maintenance, of leachate treatment plants. Under the guidance of Terry Trewern, we have led many complex projects, integrating innovative technologies and methodologies to deliver exceptional results.

Quality and Safety Standards

Our commitment to quality and safety is paramount.

We are a certified contractor under ISO 9001 for our quality management system (QMS), while our environmental management system is externally certified, under ISO 14001. Our UKAS ISO certifications (Nos. 232867 and 232868) are a testament to our high standards.

Avetta, CHAS, Achilles, and SafeContractor all recognize us as adhering strictly to Health and safety policies and procedures.

Sustainable Practices and Environmental Commitment

Sustainability is at the core of our operations. Our environmental and quality policies reflect our commitment to sustainable engineering practices, ensuring that we contribute positively to the environment.

Our commitment to working with nature to use plant-based solutions and, by so doing, improve biodiversity is also never far from the minds of our team. We continue to prioritize natural solutions such as reed bed treatment for leachate problems whenever these comply with the discharge quality requirements set by the regulatory bodies.

Rest assured that our commitment to circularity in material use and, wherever possible, to climate change mitigation ensures that by investing in our solutions, our clients really do find that they last a very long time, and what can be better value for money than that?

Our Achievements

In recent years, we have successfully completed significant projects, including the refurbishment of Deep Moor Landfill and the Bennadrove Landfill Site, as well as collaborations with CEMEX at Sutton Wick and Longford. These projects are just a few examples that underscore our capability to handle complex engineering challenges effectively.
