Phoenix Engineering has been working in South Africa for two years now, where Process Director Howard Robinson has pioneered leachate treatment since sanctions were removed in 1992, and in 2004 was awarded the President’s Award for services to waste management in Southern Africa. To date, he has designed and commissioned four full-scale plants. At present, Phoenix is providing designs for two leachate treatment plants in South Africa.

Lovu Landfill near Durban is a new landfill site, where a plant is required to treat up to 80m3/d of leachate to surface water standards, using Phoenix’s proven SBR plus reed bed polishing system. At Roundhill Landfill, which is near Buffalo City near to East London, Phoenix is working with local consultants Envitech in early stages of leachate treatment plant design, and pilot-scale treatability trials will soon be designed and undertaken as part of the plant design process.
