Phoenix’s Process Director, Howard Robinson, has recently been able to celebrate his selection for the Shropshire Over-60s county cricket team,
amazingly making his debut against the touring Australian Over-60s team at Oswestry on 19th August. The Australians have been playing warm-up matches in preparation for their Ashes Series against the England Over-60s team, and had previously won all nine of their warm-up matches convincingly, against teams such as Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire, Lancashire etc. Batting first, Australia made 251 for 9 in their 45 overs, and Shropshire came within 15 runs of this score, finishing on 236 for 8. Howard was out in a chaos of umpires fingers and “Zinger bails” in the last four overs, as Shropshire pushed hard for victory, against very good bowlers. The game was followed by a full dinner with speeches and awards. In the Over 60s County Championship, Howard played at Northamptonshire last week in the final group game, in which Shropshire gained enough points to qualify for the national knock-out stages, with a home draw against Somerset, the winners playing either Wales or Hertfordshire for a place in the semi-finals.
