Looking Back at 2019: We had a successful year during which our main activity was in Methane Stripping Plant and Landfill Leachate Treatment Plant refurbishment projects. Read on to find out more about the work that kept us busy:

Methane Stripping Plant Projects

Methane Stripping Plant (MSP) demand has continued through 2019 and is expected to continue into 2020. Following successful upgrades to the Cumbria Waste Dry Lane and Redhills MSPs, Phoenix was employed to further extend capacity at Dry Lane, through the addition of a second set of stripping reactors, and increase automation of Redhills by installing a full state of the art SCADA system with remote access.

Phoenix’s Process Director, Howard Robinson, has drafted most of the UK guidance on leachate treatment, including the present UK Environment Agency Guidance Document, “The Treatment of Landfill Leachate: Sector Guidance Note IPPC S5.03”, under Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Regulations, published in February 2007.  The design of MSPs for removal of dissolved methane from landfill leachates is almost always based on guidelines contained within that guidance (pages 39 to 43), and has been used as a basis for process design of all of the leachate MSPs that Phoenix has designed, constructed, and commissioned during the last 20 years.

Refurbishment of Landfill Leachate Treatment Plants

Refurbishment of landfill leachate treatment plants (LTPs) has again dominated 2019, with Phoenix being awarded a contract for the refurbishment of the Harewood Whin Leachate Treatment Plant operated by Yorwaste.

This was an old lagoon-based system located at the main landfill site in York.  It was originally built in 1990 and modified several times by various companies over the years.  Phoenix fully refurbished one of the lagoons to incorporate a new steel access platform and venturi aerators, which are already also providing benefits by adding heat to the process.  This lagoon was converted into the main process SBR, while the second lagoon was converted into the raw leachate balancing lagoon, allowing for controlled blending of incoming leachates.  We installed new automated process controls with a state-of-the-art SCADA interface system and remote access.

Refurbishment and Upgrade of Getlini LTP

Our specialist expertise developed over the last 6 years, in refurbishing LTPs is now being utilised further afield in Europe as we support Getlini EKO Ltd in Latvia, on the refurbishment and upgrade of its Getlini LTP.  The refurbishment of its nitrification and denitrification LTP will significantly increase its treatment capacity.  A number of interesting treatability trials, and research studies into trace metal removal, using DAF, coagulation, and adsorption have ensured we are keeping our process designs as state-of-the-art.

Summing Up on Our Year 2019

2019 was another good year for Phoenix. We were busy with a large variety of work by our Clients in the landfill sector.  As we come to the end of 2019, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Clients, Subcontractors and Suppliers for working closely with us during the past year. We look forward to working with you all in 2020.
