“Phoenix Engineering secures the contract for the refurbishment of Deep Moor Leachate Treatment Plant.”

This spring Phoenix will be undertaking the refurbishment of the leachate treatment plant at Deep Moor Landfill Site in North Devon; the site is an active landfill and waste transfer centre.

The works include:

  • Process designing and commissioning
  • Installing new aerators on a custom-built pontoon system on the existing leachate lagoon
  • New pumps, valves and leachate pipework
  • New caustic soda dosing system
  • New electrical infrastructure
  • New SCADA system to fully automate the running of the plant

The remarkable fact is that Phoenix Engineers designed, installed, and commissioned the complete electrical system including the SCADA installation for this aeration lagoon leachate treatment plant way back in the summer of 1994.

This treatment plant is a testament to the quality of the work provided as this leachate treatment plant has been in operation ever since it was first set to work in 1994.

However, the existing equipment which was provided is now all either worn out or so outdated that it needs a complete update. Not surprisingly after such a long period, its useful life has expired. The refurbishment will not only allow more reliable operation, but it will also include changes to accommodate the way that the landfill leachate quality has changed over the years.

For example, the new caustic soda system will improve the treatment of the leachate and will cater for the more aged nature of the leachate from the present landfill.

The new aerators will be accessed via a new custom-built pontoon system which will provide a much safer way to get to the aerators for servicing and oil changes and will reduce the cost of cranage which has in the past been needed to remove the aeration equipment.

The new SCADA system will use the latest version of the tried and tested Phoenix Engineer’s predecessor in-house DLOG system, itself an upgrade upon an early version of that same system in 1994.

This shows, if ever proof was needed, that Phoenix Engineers provides a very long support cycle on their systems which extends a long way beyond that provided in general by the electronics industry.

Many of the original leachate treatment plants equipped by Phoenix are still in use and have now given their owners 20 years or more of successful operation.
