At their Deep Moor landfill site, CoastalUK had a working Leachate Treatment Plant. But due to the age of the plant, the performance was not good, and it was decided to investigate an upgrade.
DEEP MOOR Leachate Treatment Plant Refurbishment Contract
A construction contract was awarded to Phoenix by CoastalUK under the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract Option A. Phoenix undertook the role of Principal Designer and Contractor. The leachate treatment plant work included the full design and construction of a new lagoon aeration system, including all pumps and controls.

Scope
The existing infrastructure included floating aerators within a lagoon. Phoenix installed a pontoon with 4 venturi aerators suspended under the pontoon. This increased the oxygen levels, improved mixing, and added heat.
The site has two raw leachate lagoons nominally “weak” and “strong” leachate storage.
Phoenix Engineering installed a new skid-mounted selector system with valving, electrically actuated valves, and a flow meter.
At the lagoon plant, a new skid-mounted positive displacement duty standby pump set was installed to feed selected leachate into the treatment lagoon.

The existing treated leachate balance tank, decant chamber and decant pumps were reused.
The final discharge pump was changed to a positive displacement unit on an inverter drive to control the discharge flow rate to ensure it will be within the consented limit at all times.
A new pH automated adjustment NaOH dosing plant was installed to maintain the lagoon pH at the optimum value for the process.

Electrics
Trenches and draw pits were formed from the control room to the remote plant and were designed by Phoenix and installed by CoastalUk local civil contractors.
The whole electrical services were replaced in accordance with BS7671:2018 AMD2. The solar input was integrated. Power factor correction was also installed to reduce running costs.

Controls
The whole treatment process is automated using the Phoenix DLOG SCADA system. The lagoon instruments include pH, DOX, Temperature, Depth, and float. Various status signals are sent back to the PLC/SCADA for control of the plant. Remote access was installed, and an alarm call-out system was added.
